Trump elected: Our take

Trump elected: Our take

Community is More Vital Than Ever

The Newsmast Foundation was created in response to the oppression of marginalised communities and expert voices on Big Tech social media.

We’re a nonprofit built to shepherd communities from Big Tech microblogging platforms towards democratic alternatives. Platforms which don’t serve a single agenda and stand up to oppressive powers who would strip voices from activists and individuals based on their gender identity, sexuality, colour of their skin, or religious beliefs.

Less than a week ago, we woke to the news that many of these communities would face further hardship and harassment in the coming years under a Trump presidency. Now it has become clear that Elon Musk and X will be a force at the heart of this presidency.

Social media has become woven into human behaviour, both for better and for worse – and the worse is about to get a lot worse.

We have been lucky to be involved in the better, building dedicated Communities for LGBTQ+ people, women, people of colour, immigrants, and disabled people across the New Social network. We helped the Kamala Harris News Group 2.0 bring together fact-based discussion, news, and information on the Democratic campaign and the U.S. election.

There is more work to be done. Our mission has never been more important.

Society, not only in the U.S. but across the world, will suffer at the hands of a Trump presidency. Dangerous rhetoric will burn across our communication channels, the fuel soaked wires of Silicon Valley no longer a way to communicate, but a way to hate.

We must resist.

We must allow social media to be social, to be a space that accommodates everyone, not the needs of the elite few. A place where diversity thrives, in every sense.

To the communities, the groups of people who make the Newsmast Foundation mission possible, please, help us build a social internet for everyone. Build your DNA into the foundations so deep none can ever remove you.

With radical optimism for a better internet,

The Newsmast Foundation Team.
